The cold temperature and slippery walkways almost beg for someone to fall, but fortunately, our team at Home Advantage Rehabilitation Solutions will help. We have some tips for preventing winter falls that you can utilize to stay upright.

Common Fall Injuries

There are times when people fall and can get right back up with no issues. However, for others, especially in the senior population, falling down can lead to a severe injury. Should this happen to you, we highly recommend scheduling an appointment with our team. We have the treatment options that will help patients overcome all of the common fall-related injuries, including the below:

  • Bone bruises.
  • Fractures.

Helpful Tips To Stay Upright

  • When traveling outside, wear shoes or boots that provide strong traction.
  • Keep your hands out of your pockets so you can use your arms to help keep your balance.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and walkways.
  • If you see a path covered in ice or snow, try to find an alternate route.
  • If you do have to walk across a snow-covered area, take small, controlled steps.

Coping with Psoriatic Arthritis

Have you recently received a diagnosis of Psoriatic Arthritis? At Home Advantage Rehabilitation, we understand how this form of arthritis can affect your life. We offer In Home Rehabilitation Services Long Island that will help you cope and manage this disease!

What is Psoriatic Arthritis?

Psoriatic Arthritis, a branch of arthritis, impacts specific individuals who have psoriasis. Psoriasis is a condition that features red patches of skin that are covered in what looks like silver-like scales. Most patients develop psoriasis before being diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis, and joint problems may occur before the skin patches appear.

The causes of Psoriatic Arthritis mainly occur when a patient’s immune system begins to attack healthy cells or tissue. The abnormal immune response can cause inflammation in your joints as well as overproduction of skin cells.

Symptoms of Psoriatic Arthritis

Psoriatic Arthritis has the ability to only affect joints on one side of the body or both sides, both of which can be very painful to the patient. Some of the symptoms of Psoriasis-Arthritis include:

  • Joint pain.
  • Stiffness.
  • Swelling.

These actions can affect essentially any part of your body and can range from relatively mild to severe. If patients do not receive timely treatment for this condition, it will likely become debilitating.

Both psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis are both chronic diseases that tend to get worse over time; a patient may, however, experience periods of time where the symptoms seem to be less intense along with periods of time where the symptoms are at its most painful. While there is no cure for psoriatic arthritis, learning how to manage and cope with this disease is made more comfortable with In Home Rehabilitation Services Long Island.

Range of Motion Exercises for the Knee

The knee is one of the most often injured joints in the body and can cause a great deal of pain and inconvenience for those who suffer from chronic or severe injuries. Many of these injuries can make leaving your house for outpatient care difficult, and that’s where we come in. Home Advantage Rehabilitation Solutions offers the unique luxury of bringing state of the art physical therapy to your front door. Our talented team of therapists have decades of experience in the field and will do everything in their power to return you to full health. If you are looking for in-home rehabilitation services near me, look no further than Home Advantage Rehabilitation Services. In the meantime, check out these exercises that can help you build strength and regain a full range of motion in your knee.

What is Range of Motion?

Range of motion” is defined as the full movement potential of a joint. Oftentimes, injuries prevent our joints from having a full range of motion due to inflammation or pain. A joint that does not have access to its full range of motion can try to compensate and end up hurting itself further by having to work harder.

Key Exercises for Restoring Full Range of Motion

Restoring full range of motion to the knee with in-home rehabilitation services near me requires certain vital exercises that build strength and soften up the tissue surrounding the knee, allowing it to move freely. The following is a list of some exercises that help improve range of motion in the knee:

  • Sitting knee extension
  • Sitting knee flexion
  • Wall slides
  • Calf stretch
  • Groin stretch
  • Step-ups
  • Mini squats
  • Standing heel raises
  • Clamshell

Exercises to Avoid

Not all exercises are created equal when it comes to restoring range of motion. Some exercises can put excessive stress on the knee and cause reinjury. For example, deep squats and lunges can often put undue strain on the knee. Additionally, explosive movements like running and jumping should be avoided during the early stages of therapy, at all if you are older. The key to successful rehab is knowing your limits and pushing them, but smartly. Trying to do too much before you are ready is a recipe for reinjury.

Seeking In-Home Rehabilitation Services Near Me?

Excellent physical therapy is incredibly important for ensuring you make a full recovery from your knee injury, whether it be a one-time freak injury like a torn ACL or a chronic injury like arthritis. With Home Advantage Rehabilitation Solutions, you can reap the benefits of world-class physical therapy from the comfort of your own home. If you are seeking in-home rehabilitation services near me and are ready to start your road to recovery, contact us today!

How Can I Do Speech Therapy at Home?

As we have been spending more time at home while resources are limited, it can be easy to fall behind on a lot. This is especially true for speech therapy patients. Speech therapists work to create a program for patients which often involves continuous appointments. We understand that it can be difficult to attend these appointments at this time which is why we think it is important to work on your speech therapy on your own! Here at Home Advantage Rehabilitation Solutions, we want to see your progress which is why we offer in-home speech therapy on Long Island.

What is Speech Therapy?

Speech therapy can be used for both children and adults. It is a form of therapy that focuses on your speech, pronunciation, and communication. Often, people experience some underlying issues that can make these things more difficult. Some of these underlying issues may be:

  • Articulation Disorder- This means it can be difficult to pronounce certain word sounds.
  • Fluency Disorder- This is when it is hard for a person to create sentences and flow through their words correctly.
  • Expressive Disorder- This happens when a person has difficulty expressing their feelings/concerns through words.
  • Receptive Disorders- This is when a person has difficulty understanding others and what they mean by their words.

These are some of the many different conditions that can impact your speech. We offer in-home speech therapy on Long Island. Our doctors will access a potential patient to decide if speech therapy is right for them. The amount of therapy, the intensity of the therapy, and time of the therapy of the patient all depend on the reasoning for speech therapy, and their specific success rate. We believe it is important to get evaluated for speech therapy if you think you may benefit from it. It may help you communicate better than you ever have!

At-Home Exercises

Unfortunately, being away from speech therapy for a long time can prevent improvement. This is why it is important to keep up with your speech therapy while you’re home! Luckily, there are some exercises you can do at home without a speech therapist! Here are some tips for in-home speech therapy on Long Island:

  • Schedule a speech therapy time! Scheduling a specific time to do your exercises can encourage you to continue every day!
  • Make a plan. Our speech therapists always begin by making a plan for patients. This means that we evaluate the patient and then figure out which exercises will benefit them! Practicing some exercises may help you find which ones are the best for you.
  • Choose a speech therapy room. Holding your speech therapy sessions in the same place in your home every time can help create a routine!
  • Remove distraction. It can be extremely helpful to find a quiet place to help you focus!
  • Have a family member help! Having someone else involved in these sessions can be helpful when you want to try to practice communicating with others.
  • Reward your effort! It can be difficult to practice speech especially when you are alone and at home. Reward yourself when you see progress!

In Home Physical Therapy on Long Island Copy

Home Advantage Rehabilitation Solutions (HARS) was founded in 2008 by Kevin Mangan, PT, DPT, and Michael Marzano, OTR/L. Together they have over 45 years of combined experience in home-based rehabilitation. HARS was formed out of necessity. Kevin and Mike, like most therapists, delivered therapy through traditional Certified Home Health Agencies (CHHAs) for many years. CHHAs provide an excellent and need service, especially to those recently discharged from hospitals and rehabilitation facilities. However, there were significant constraints on the frequency (number of times per week), and duration (number of weeks) of services, for a variety of reasons.  Furthermore, when clients had to be discharged due to no longer being “homebound”, the only option was to refer them to traditional outpatient clinics. Unfortunately, the vast majority didn’t go to the clinic. This was usually due to transportation issues or the laborious effort required to leave home. Many of those who did go were frustrated by the busy clinic setting, where one on one time with the therapist was limited at best. Their solution was Home Advantage Rehabilitation Solutions (HARS), a premier multidisciplinary homecare company, where they could coordinate In Home Physical Therapy on Long Island, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and a variety of ancillary services.

Meet The Founders:

Seeking more of a medical foundation, Kevin took a hospital-based position practicing acute care and acute rehabilitation. He was later employed as the PT supervisor at one of the areas busiest sub-acute rehabilitation centers for nearly 13 years. Kevin evaluated, treated, and supervised the care of 400-600 patients per year, with a variety of conditions, from ventilator dependence, amputee care, orthopedic injury and post-op care, neurological conditions such as traumatic brain injury (TBI), strokes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Kevin also practiced homecare since 1995. In 2008, Kevin joined forces with Mike to form their own home care company, known today as Home Advantage Rehabilitation Solutions.

Benefits Of Physical Therapy

benefits of physical therapy

During anyone’s life, injury and accidents are inevitable. Injuries are often treatable at home, but in some cases, surgery or other operations may be required. If injuries go untreated and rehab isn’t performed, these injuries can worsen and eventually lead to more health problems. If you have been injured, you can benefit from In Home Physical Therapy on Long Island, with Home Advantage Rehabilitation.

How Can Physical Therapy Help Me?

The most common reason people engage in physical therapy is that a certain part of the body is in pain and movement is limited. Physical Therapy is intended to help rehabilitate injuries and conditions sustained in the musculoskeletal system. Physical Therapists study the body to help enhance, treat, and prevent injuries that affect the body’s ability to move properly.

Benefits Of Physical Therapy

Here are some of the benefits of Physical Therapy:

Pain Management: reduces pain naturally without the use of harmful drugs like opioids. Stretches and exercises help keep your joints and muscles mobilized which reduces aches and pains and often eliminates them. If performed daily, it may help keep the pain from coming back for good.

Avoiding surgery: although surgery sometimes is unavoidable with certain injuries, it can be prevented in minor cases. PT can help heal damaged muscle tissue through stabilization which eliminates the need for surgery.

Surgery Recovery: After surgery, the muscles in the affected area tend to be weak. If they go untreated, a second surgery could be required. PT helps reduce the swelling and stabilizes the affected areas after surgery. This eliminates the need for multiple surgeries.

Injury Prevention: PT assesses weak points in one’s body. These weaknesses can often lead to future injuries. Specific plans can be created to help strengthen the weakness in the body.

Stroke Recovery: When someone suffers a stroke, the person will likely lose mobility in some part of their body. Physical Therapy aims to strengthen the affected parts of the body and enhance the rest of the body to make daily activities easy again.

Help Manage Diabetes: PT can help manage your blood sugar levels through exercise.

Helps Heart and Lung Disease: PT can use exercise as a way to help reduce cholesterol, reduce body weight and fat, reduce blood pressure, and increase lung capacity.

PT for Athletes: PT helps treat injuries and strengthens the body during the process. This gives athletes a competitive advantage on the field and helps them return to playing faster.

What is In-Home Physical Therapy? – Home Advantage Rehabilitation

Physical Therapy itself is a healthcare profession concerned with the rehabilitation of impairments and disabilities incurred as a result of disease or injury. PT’s take a thorough history and provide a physical examination to diagnose and establish a plan of care focused on the alleviation of pain, improvement of range of motion, strength, balance, and endurance to achieve the optimum level of comfort and functional mobility. At Home Physical Therapy For Seniors is often requested by geriatric patients who are unable to leave their place of living, but still have a medical ailment that needs therapeutic treatment.

So How Does This Apply To Home Care?

At Home Advantage Rehabilitation Solutions, our therapists are equipped with most of the same tools that are used in the clinic itself. This includes some of the following: portable bikes, upper extremity ergometers, steppers, hydrocollator and cold packs, electric stimulators, ultrasound units, weights, resistance bands, balance boards, and vestibular discs.

How Can At Home Physical Therapy For Seniors Help?

home health pt for seniors

Essentially, it depends on your type of ailment and level of discomfort.

Often, strength training is key when it comes to treating an elderly patient through physical therapy. Elderly patients are often disheartened by their lack of physical stamina. Even if someone’s endurance is not what it once was, there is hope to improve his or her way of life. By making some changes to their daily lives to include physical activities, geriatric patients can improve their strength and coordination.

It is no secret that we lose muscle mass as we age. However, we do have the ability to slow the rate with which we lose our strength. The elderly patients who do not exercise see a much more rapid decrease in strength and muscle mass than those who do. By adding a strength training program to their lives, the geriatric community can remain strong and improve their lives in the process.

When we work out we strengthen our muscles, bones and tendons by increasing their size and density. When we don’t work out the opposite happens. Our muscles and bones can actually shrink and become less dense when we don’t use them and this happens at a much faster rate as we age. Even elderly patients with poor strength can see results relatively quickly if they begin a proper strength training program.

One of the main reasons that older patients choose not to participate in strength training is that they fear the workouts will be too strenuous and cause further complications to existing health conditions such as arthritis. Strength training can have negative effects, especially for beginners. Therefore it is wise to consult with a doctor before starting and to come up with a plan to start slowly. Afterward, At Home Physical Therapy For Seniors could be the prescribed plan for treatment.

A typical exercise program consists of both free weight and machine training that works to strengthen both the upper and lower body. It is a good idea to alternate between different body parts when working out and to work out at least three days a week. Just by adding a simple strength training program such as this, a person of any age can improve his or her overall health. Elderly people can have the added benefit of improving their everyday lives by making simple tasks easier to perform.

The staff at Home Advantage Rehabilitation will be happy to help set up a plan that is right for you. Give us a call today at 516-459-9439.

Osteoporosis – Can Home Care PT Be Your SOLUTION?

home care pt for osteoporosis

Is your loved one suffering from osteoporosis? This debilitating condition typically targets the geriatric community. Thankfully, our team at Home Advantage Rehabilitation Solutions provides At Home Physical Therapy For Seniors. If you or a loved one is unable to travel due to the painful complications associated with osteoporosis, we can help.

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a disease where the quality of your bones decreases. Your bones become weak and develop miniature holes throughout the bone structure limiting flexibility and overall strength. Your bones become more fragile and brittle which increases the risk of injury. The most common injury with Osteoporosis is a bone fracture. Osteoporosis is a dangerous disease because there aren’t many symptoms until a serious injury occurs.

Osteoporosis requires a medical diagnosis and although there is no cure, there are many preventative measures to take to avoid further injury and help manage pain. At Home Physical Therapy For Seniors can help, with comprehensive rehabilitation.

What causes Osteoporosis?

Bones are constantly changing throughout your lifetime. The lack of important hormones in your body is the leading cause of osteoporosis. A decrease in estrogen in women and androgen in men can cause the development of Osteoporosis in your bones. This unfortunate disease is more common among people over the age of 60.

Although uncommon for people under 60, the lack of calcium can play a huge factor in the development of Osteoporosis. You need calcium to repair and build new bone throughout the body, and without this mineral, your body is breaking down faster then it has time to replace. Over-time you will end up with fragile and delicate bones which can greatly decrease your quality of life.

Treatment For Osteoporosis

Although there is no cure, medication and a healthy diet can improve conditions. Treatment usually focuses on preventing more bone loss and improving the quality of the bones around your body. Lifting weights and exercising to increase strength in the muscles can reduce the risk of bone fractures as well. An increase of calcium in your diet can also help with bone repair. Home care physical therapy is also known to ease tension and improve strength in the body.

Osteoporosis – Can Home Care PT Be Your SOLUTION?

    In Home Therapy For Seniors

Is your loved one suffering from osteoporosis? This debilitating condition typically targets the geriatric community. Thankfully, our team at Home Advantage Rehabilitation Solutions provides in home therapy for seniors.

In home therapy for seniors can help, with comprehensive rehabilitation.

Physical Therapy For Elderly At Home

What is In-Home Physical Therapy? – Home Advantage Rehabilitation

Physical Therapy itself is a healthcare profession concerned with the rehabilitation of impairments and disabilities incurred as a result of disease or injury. PT’s take a thorough history and provide a physical examination to diagnose and establish a plan of care focused on the alleviation of pain, improvement of range of motion, strength, balance, and endurance to achieve the optimum level of comfort and functional mobility. Physical Therapy for Elderly at Home is often requested by geriatric patients who are unable to leave their place of living, but still have a medical ailment that needs therapeutic treatment.

How Can Physical Therapy for Elderly at Home Help?

      home health pt for seniors

Afterward, Physical Therapy for Elderly at Home could be the prescribed plan for treatment.

Home Health Physical Therapy on Long Island

Their solution was Home Advantage Rehabilitation Solutions (HARS), a premier multidisciplinary homecare company, where they could coordinate Home Health Physical Therapy on Long Island, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and a variety of ancillary services.

        Meet The Founders:

        Kevin Mangan, PT, DPT

He began working in an outpatient clinic, where he had the opportunity to work with a variety of sports and orthopedic injuries, and to work with many professional athletes from the New York Rangers and New York Islanders.

If you have been injured, you can benefit from Home Health Physical Therapy on Long Island, with Home Advantage Rehabilitation.
